Error 1606 when upgrade to Backup Exec 13 (2010)

When attempting to upgrade to Symantec Backup Exec 2010 from Backup Exec 12 error 1606 is given and “barks” about access to a network location. This occurs when Backup exec has previously been upgraded, for example from 11 to 12. For some reason the install is looking at the an older upgrade version which causes it to fail. The fix for this can be found on Symantec’s website but they provide a link to the “Windows Installer Cleanup Utility” that has been discontinued...

Infected with net.net virus

It has finally happened, last night I was infected with the net.net virus. I was searching some forums, not sure which ones, and out of no where java errors started exploding on my screen while images were loading. That is usually never a good sign and I knew something was up. I closed my browsers and opened task manager and saw some oddly named processes. Then a popup notice appeared saying “Windows defender” was deactivated… also not a good sign. I then turned to “msconfig”...

Backup Exec 12 Stays Queued

Now there are MANY reasons why Backup Exec will go into a “queued” status but in this case I was running a SQL backup job that was backing up to a “Backup-to-Disk” folder located on a external (My World) WD harddrive. In an attempt to resolve the issue I tried restarting the services, reinstalling the agents, and rebooting the server itself, formatting the external drive. HP GbE2 Interconnect Switch Password Reset

The password to reset the admin password is “2wGDEp|B” (no qoutes and no user name) This must be done through the local consol/managment port via serial cable. After reseting the password immediatly “apply” and then “save” for the new password take take effect and to stick. The reset procedure may need to done more then once to be able to login via the web interface… no idea why, thats what it took for me.

Assign Drive Letters to USB Automatically (USBDLM)

I had a situation in where I have to store some very large backups on USB drives and they are rotated daily. If I wanted to use backup Exec but run more than one concurrent job at a time I could not put the drives in a pool and instead just assign a new “backup to disk” device. For example, one backup to disk device I have assigned to a folder on drive letter F. The problem came when switching the drives the next day. Increase Java memory for Openfire Jabber Server

Open Fire is a great FREE cross platform jabber instant messenger server. I have been using it for about 2 years now and only had really one problem. The problem came down to java memory which the default was not enough and once the server reached the limit it would basically freeze up and would force me to restart Openfire. Setup PuTTy for VT320 Emulation

At my current job we currently use a way over priced termail emulator to connect to our HP-UX (unix) server. This emulator supports vt320 emulation which is needed to use the function keys which is setup as shortcuts for our staff. The software is very outdated and to renew would be very expensive.
